About Heleen Verleur

Heleen Verleur is a pianist and composer. She studied classical piano at the Hilversums Conservatorium. After her study she took composition lessons with Jeff Hamburg.

She made musical accompaniments for children’s books (Het Engeltje & Het Duiveltje, Sjrek, Heksenboek – auteur Sanne de Bakker).

Heleen set poems to music, including the Spanish ‘Los Mozos de Monleon’ with which she won first prize in Spain in 2013 at Hispa Song International.

She composed her piece ‘Across’ for the famous reed quintet Calefax and won the ‘encore’ competition in 2009.

You could describe her musical taste as fusion: not only classical, but not jazz or world either. Her music forms a bridge between all kinds of styles.

Heleen’s passion is to let children play together at a high level as early as possible. For this she wrote a series of ‘Piano Trios for Early Learners’ (piano, violin, cello) which have been published in three volumes by Alfred UK. Musical fairy tales for trio!

Her Tango Trio has been performed in America in 2023:

Recording from US

She has written for strings, winds, (bassoon, clarinet, saxophone), voice, piano (also 15-hand, 5-hand, 4-hand) and choir.

Recently Heleen wrote a huge amount of compositions for recorder ensemble, commissioned by the International Suzuki Association for Recorder. A book of arrangements for recorder ensemble will be published soon.

She made a cd with singer Renée Harp that moves people to the bone:  I carry your heart

Publishers of Heleen are Broekmans & Van Poppel, Matching Arts, Donemus, and Alfred. Donemus has published her ‘Pianodieren’ (Piano Animals) for piano 4-handed and 6-handed, among other things. Heleen also does storytelling performances on location. Until recently, this was ‘George Sand and Chopin’, performed in the Netherlands and abroad. Her new performance ‘Domenico Scarlatti & Maria Barbara’ will premiere in 2023.

In 2023 she wrote a four-part composition for bassoon player Stefanie Liedtke for the Day of the Composer 17th of Juni 2023: Ki 1, 2, 3 and 4, that have been accompanied by both loopstation and singing bowls.

She also wrote for the Composers Day: ‘Intercity,’ a piece for 5 hands on 1 piano, to be played at trainstations with piano’s..

In her storytelling concert Scarlatti & Maria Barbara Heleen plays the role of the Spanish princess Maria Barbara, who has just turned 17, a student of the Neapolitan composer Domenico Scarlatti who could play the harpsichord very well. Maria Barbara and her husband Fernando are held captive in the palace for 17 years. How did Scarlatti’s music save them?

During the storytelling concert Chopin & George Sand Heleen takes on the role of writer George Sand, who is miraculously present at this concert. George talks about her meeting and relationship with ‘Chip Chip’. Sand’s stories and Chopin’s intense music seem to take you back to the 19th century. The theme of women’s emancipation is also discussed to some extent, because Sand – as one of the first feminists- believed that women had the same rights as men. She was one of the first writers who could make a living from her pen. Both concerts can be booked via heleenverleur111@gmail.com

  1. Hi Heleen,

We met briefly at one of Brook’s recitals. Brook suggested that I contact you about lesson for my daughter, Eva. Eva has been taking piano lessons with her for 3 years; she will be 11 years in February. Brook and I have been discussing if Brook’s teaching style is the right fit for Eva, and thought it would be good to talk with you. Would you be interested/willing/able to discuss? Many thanks, Suzanna

  2. Dag Heleen,

Ik draai nog steeds I carry your heart.
    Hartelijks,
